Overview

Established in 2007 following a partnership reorganisation of KM Chye & Murad, boutique firm Murad Yee Partnership focuses its corporate and securities practice on four key areas: mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring, capital markets, and venture capital/private equity. The firm regularly advises listed companies, government-linked corporations, multinational subsidiaries and foreign entities. Alongside its associate firms, Murad & Foo based in Penang and Hazidin Chan in Kuala Lumpur, the firm has a combined professional strength of 15 to 20 fee-earners, in addition to being able to draw upon an extensive network of international law firms and advisers across southeast Asia and beyond. Key contacts at the firm include partners Fook Weng Yee and Ken Nie Kuay.

Client feedback

They are able to produce high-quality work with valuable experiences and deep understanding of local regulatory requirements and a very dedicated team committed to client needs.” – Capital markets

The firm is very reliable, providing sound and detailed advice, even within short timeframes. The firm prioritises their client's timelines and frequently works past office hours to meet tight deadlines, and can be reached even on public holidays, when necessary. In addition, the fees charged are very reasonable. – Corporate and M&A

Fook Weng Yee

He has strong commercial acumen, thus able to provide practical legal advice. He is also very professional, detailed-oriented and genuinely a pleasure to liaise with. He meets all timelines, even tight deadlines, and is accessible whenever needed.

Work highlights

Representing Hibiscus Petroleum as Malaysian counsel in its $259.4 million acquisition of TotalEnergies EP (Brunei), marking the company's largest M&A transaction to date. The deal gives Hibiscus a 37.5% stake in Brunei's Block B Maharaja Lela Jamalulalam gas field. This cross-border transaction, involving multiple jurisdictions and regulators, strengthens Hibiscus's position as a Malaysian unicorn and a significant independent E&P player in southeast Asia.
