Exclusive: Japan regulator speaks out about Kirin-Suntory merger

Japans Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has revealed that it will investigate Kirin and Suntorys expected merger when it has concrete proposals from the parties.
We understand that Kirin and Suntory will apply for a consultation regarding the combination before it will be conducted. The FTC will investigate it after that, said Daisuke Yamamoto, deputy director of the FTC's M&A division in an interview with Asialaw.
On Tuesday, Kirin, a beer manufacturer, announced that it was in talks with Suntory, a smaller brewer, to merge in what would be a $40.9 billion merger. Some observers have raised concerns about the size of the merger and its market share.
