Overview
Advocatus Law’s principal strength lies in complex commercial disputes that intersect with insolvency, shareholder rights, financial services regulation, fraud, and cross-border litigation. The firm has built a practice that regularly handles disputes arising from corporate collapses, distressed investments, securities enforcement actions, cryptocurrency-related insolvencies, and closely contested shareholder conflicts. A recurring theme across its recent mandates is involvement in matters that raise novel legal questions and proceed to the appellate courts, demonstrating an ability to manage disputes with broader implications for Singapore jurisprudence.

The practice is led by Christopher Anand Daniel, supported by partners Harjean Kaur, Ganga Avadiar and Eileen Yeo. Together, the team combines expertise in litigation, insolvency, banking and finance, employment, and regulatory matters, enabling the firm to advise clients through disputes that often involve overlapping commercial, governance and reputational considerations.

A notable area of strength is insolvency-related litigation. The firm has acted in matters arising from major corporate and fund collapses, including Hin Leong Trading and Three Arrows Capital, generating significant legal developments concerning directors’ powers, liquidators’ investigative rights, confidentiality obligations and insolvency procedures. The team has also demonstrated particular expertise in representing founders, directors and stakeholders in contentious insolvency proceedings where regulatory scrutiny and cross-border enforcement risks are significant.

Advocatus Law has also developed a strong shareholder and corporate governance disputes practice. Recent mandates include minority oppression claims, trust and fiduciary duty disputes, intra-corporate conflicts, and crypto-related shareholder litigation involving jurisdictional challenges and injunctive relief. These matters frequently require the firm to navigate complex ownership structures, competing stakeholder interests and allegations of misconduct while protecting clients’ commercial positions.

The firm is equally active in financial services and fraud-related litigation. Recent work includes acting in a precedent-setting dispute arising from a Ponzi-type investment scheme, securities enforcement proceedings involving a listed hospitality trust, and commercial disputes involving allegations of misrepresentation and conspiracy. Such mandates demonstrate the firm’s ability to manage matters involving substantial financial exposure, regulatory considerations and public scrutiny.

Through its involvement in cryptocurrency disputes, offshore corporate structures, and proceedings involving Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands entities, together with its membership in Alliott Global Alliance, the firm has strengthened its cross-border capabilities. The result is a disputes practice that combines technical sophistication, appellate advocacy experience and strategic oversight across some of the most complex and closely watched commercial disputes in the Singapore market.

Work highlights

Acting for members of the Lim family in litigation arising from the collapse of Hin Leong Trading, one of the most significant commodity trading failures in Singapore. The firm represented the applicants in proceedings seeking to restrain a law firm from acting for Hin Leong and its liquidators, raising novel questions concerning breach of confidence, joint retainers and civil procedure. The matter ultimately resulted in important Court of Appeal decisions addressing the application of the Henderson v Henderson doctrine and broader issues of procedural fairness

Representing defendants in a high-value commercial fraud and misrepresentation dispute arising from a Ponzi-type investment scheme involving claims of approximately S$6 million. The case involved allegations of fraudulent misrepresentation, conspiracy and investor losses linked to a collapsed investment arrangement. While the dispute progressed through both trial and appellate stages, it is notable for establishing important principles regarding the potential liability of individuals who promote or endorse investment schemes.

Acting for the co-founder of collapsed cryptocurrency hedge fund Three Arrows Capital, in Singapore proceedings arising from the fund's insolvency. The mandate resulted in two significant Court of Appeal judgments clarifying the operation of examination powers under Singapore's insolvency regime and the appealability of certain court orders.
