US companies unfazed by California’s data protection law

Companies in the US are largely unfazed by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), which becomes effective on January 1 2020, following a lengthy legislative process and extensive lobbying.

The law faced intense scrutiny from West Coast-based tech companies including Facebook and Amazon. It ended up passing with minimal amendments.

The CCPA affects corporates nationwide, not just those based in California – but only those making over $25 million in gross revenue or having collected the data of 50,000 or more California consumers.

"In our experience many companies are taking a band-aid approach by ascertaining the minimum needed to be compliant with legislation and doing just that," said Cillian Kieran, CEO at data privacy company, Ethyca.

Of course, while this conserves resources in the short term, there is the risk that companies are simply avoiding the inevitable.
