Breaking new ground: litigation funding in the spotlight

IFLR talks to Therium co-founder and director Neil Purslow about the rise of third party litigation financing in the financial sector, and how the market is expected to evolve in the next few years

What sectors are you primarily involved in and what criteria do you use as a basis for your litigation funding decisions?

Litigation funders are typically agnostic as to the sectors in which they fund as the focus is very much on the merits of the individual cases which are funded. That said, certain sectors appear regularly such as the extractive industries – oil and gas and mining – and renewable energy, because of the nature of the disputes in those sectors and some of the trends affecting those markets.

In recent years, the financial services industry has also featured heavily, partly because of its size in the UK and partly as a consequence of the global financial crisis...
