Clifford Chance won international law firm of the year last night at IFLR’s annual Asia Awards in Hong Kong. The firm was also involved on two winning deals as well as being shortlisted in all eight team of the year categories.

“Clifford Chance has had a fantastic year and I congratulate them on their success,” said IFLR managing editor Lucy McNulty.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer was also celebrating after picking up the prestigious China practice award, which rewards international firms for their innovation within China. The firm was also named equity team of the year.

It was a good year too for Ropes & Gray, which won private equity team of the year. Weil Gotshal & Manges won M&A team of the year, Shearman & Sterling project finance team of the year, Allen & Overy structured finance and securitisation team of the year, and Norton Rose restructuring team of the year.

Linklaters won debt and equity-linked team of the year, and senior associate Michael Ng scooped IFLR’s inaugural rising star award for senior associates. Ng won praise for his work on innovative dim sum deals, such as Chinese real-estate developer Gemdale’s high-yield bonds.

Herbert Smith Freehills won IFLR’s first financial services regulatory team of the year: the award was created to respond to increasing demand due to global regulatory issues.

As for in-house teams, HSBC received our in-house debt and equity-linked team of the year award while Credit Suisse scored the in-house equity team of the year award.

Mark Steward, chief executive of enforcement at Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission, was named as recipient for IFLR’s award for services to financial regulation.

Credit Suisse’s Patricia Sindel was presented with our outstanding in-house contribution award.

China Accounting Blog author Dr Paul Gillis won our second market reform award, which recognizes an individual our readers believe has made the most significant contributions to market reform in the past year. Gillis’ updates and analysis of the tense situation between the US’ SEC and the CSRC was highly praised by counsel.
