Malta is set to be the big winner of the EU's Ucits IV legislation package released in July.

The scheme's newly-confirmed passport provisions, coupled with the country's liberal redomiciliation guidelines, will give Malta an edge over the EU's other fund centres in attracting Ucits-compliant structures.

"We are seeing an increase in the number of funds establishing themselves in Malta," said Katya Azzopardi, partner at Simon Tortell & Associates in Valletta. This is largely due to the fact that many promoters wish to set up funds within a EU jurisdiction.
