Japan's poison pill surprise

The Japanese government has unexpectedly called for a rethink on poison pills, providing a much needed boost after recent setbacks.

In a consultation paper released on August 8, the government warned against poison pills and other defensive measures by management. It said: "Those measures, aimed at protecting their own interests could have a negative effect on productivity and in the long run fail to raise corporate efficiency."
