Financing SMEs: what Europe can learn from Korea

  • Korea’s Financial Services Commission recently launched a bourse for SMEs, known as the Korea New Exchange;
  • The exchange encourages SMEs to engage with public funding by exempting them from securities registration statements and quarterly reports;
  • But, according to Jae-Hoon Yoo, the commissioner of Korea’s Financial Services Commission, the capital markets should not be seen as a panacea for every small venture;
  • Securities regulators need to better understand which SMEs to target for access to the public markets, said the Korean regulatory chief.
