Fifty-nine per cent of European corporate counsel surveyed
think there is more protectionism in European M&A than
there was five years ago.
In the last year, there has been a flurry of high-profile
reports on protectionism. E.On's bid for Spanish energy company
Endesa rumbled on for months and was only resolved in the last
few weeks. Enel's targeting of French and Belgian utility
company Suez was muscled out by a French government-approved
merger of Gaz de France and Suez in February 2006....
