The Commission’s Chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo talks to IFLR’s John Crabb about the need to balance derivative market regulation and financial system stability with economic growth and prosperity

What initially drew you to the CFTC and caused you to take the leap from firm to regulator?

I have a broker management and legal background, working in New York City from 2001 to mid- 2014, when I entered the regulatory arena as a CFTC Commissioner.

And, for your readers who may not know, I play the banjo, which is a lot like throwing a javelin blindfolded, because you don't have to be very good to get people's attention. But playing the banjo is not my most unusual qualification, as I have been a long-standing advocate of swaps market reform, going back to when I entered the swaps industry in 2000.
