Royal Dutch Shell - Group legal director, 2003 to present. Head of global legal function containing approximately 800 lawyers and 450 intellectual property professionals, compliance officers, paralegals and support staff.

ABB Group - General counsel, 1988 to 2003. Led legal and compliance department of 150 lawyers, 50 compliance officers and over 50 intellectual property specialists.

BBC Brown Boveri - Legal counsel, 1977 to 1988. International and multilingual practice with a wide range of transactional legal matters, contracts for large projects and extensive negotiation and drafting.

Apart from a brief stint with his brother's provincial firm in Switzerland, Beat Hess has never been in private practice. Royal Dutch Shell's legal director is an in-house corporate counsel careerist and he doesn't have any regrets: "Why would I? I've always valued the hugely challenging tasks and varied workload in my career," he says.
