Firm overview

MLA, founded in 1997, is a leading full-service law firm in Ethiopia offering a broad range of legal services. Among these are: advising and representing clients on various international and local financing, security devices, mergers and acquisitions, legal due diligence projects, tax, sovereign debt and sovereign debt guarantee, private equity, dispute resolutions, litigation, contracts, investment, employment & immigration, civil society organizations (NGO/NPOs); intellectual property, aviation, mining, energy, hospitality and leisure, and other related corporate and investment related matters.

Successes
1) MLA assisted foreign company in Ethiopia assessed with close to USD 50 Million tax liabilities by the Ethiopian Tax Authority. MLA assisted the client in developing an appropriate case strategy to bring the matter to review within the Tax Authority and successfully litigated the matter against the Authority’s tax auditors and finally managed to have the company’s overall tax liabilities lowered to under USD 12 Million.

2) MLA advised one of Denmark’s largest banks in relation to a €117.3 million loan agreement to Ethiopia and issued capacity and enforceability opinion on the transaction. What makes this assignment special is that the project enables the introduction of Danish wind power technology to Ethiopia and promotes the sustainable use of renewable resources, which will feed 100 MW into Ethiopia's electricity grid.
