Nader Hayaux & Goebel, a Mexico City-based law firm, has appointed two lawyers, Luciano Pérez and Adrián López, to its partnership as of January 1. The promotions bring the firm’s total partnership to 14.
Pérez works in mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance, and insurance. Over the past year, Pérez has helped acclimate companies to the Insurance and Surety Institutions Law of April 2015. “One of the biggest challenges last year in Mexico was the implementation of the new insurance law for the insurance companies. Basically, the new insurance framework incorporates for insurance companies the principles of Solvency II, which follows the same trend previously implemented in Mexico for banks and broker dealers,” he said.
Meanwhile, López focuses on banking and finance, mergers and acquisitions, real estate and government procurement. In an interview with IFLR1000, López discussed the near future of cross-border investment opportunities in Mexico in an uncertain climate. “I believe that Mexico has an adequate legal and governmental frame to sustain growth and open investment opportunities,” López said. “Based on the most recent macroeconomic forecasts, a number of Mexican companies may become attractive targets for foreign investors during the next year. The fall of the international oil prices may have the effect of undermining the activity in the local market though.”
López added, “Some of the most important forecasts predict growth in auto manufacturing, logistics, electronics manufacturing, transportation and agribusiness, among others.”
Both partners have a notable record of transactions. For example, in April 2015, Pérez and López advised General Electric Real Estate Mexico in selling its real estate loan portfolio to an affiliate of The Blackstone Group for $3 billion.
López obtained a law degree from the Universidad Panamericana in 2004, did his postgraduate studies there in commercial law, and obtained a master's degree in banking and finance law from Boston University in 2009. Pérez completed his Bachelor of Laws at Universidad Iberoamericana, Ciudad de México in 2002. He obtained a Master of Laws in 2006 from Erasmus University Rotterdam and a diploma in insurance and bonding law from Universidad Panamericana in 2010.
