Dechert has scored a coup by luring a noted financial services lawyer to its office in Orange County.
Timothy Spangler, who previously headed the funds practices at global firms Sidley Austin and Kaye Scholer, is now a partner in Dechert’s Southern California office. Spangler advises clients on the launch of hedge funds, private equity funds, venture capital funds, real estate funds, and funds of funds. Spangler is qualified to practice law in the United Kingdom, where he was based from 1997 to 2010, as well as New York and California.
Clients seek out Spangler’s advice on the intricacies of cross-border fund formation, registration, and marketing. In a discussion with IFLR1000, Spangler reflected on some of the more complicated issues.
“When you’re marketing your fund internationally, you need to know what the local equivalent of a 3c1 or 3c7 exemption or Regulation D entails. Whether its Argentina, Singapore or Dubai, you need to have some sense of broker-dealer law and securities exchange law. They do have their own separate Company Act, they do have their own 10B5 in the rest of the world. My client base, domestic and internationally, really respond well to that knowledge,” Spangler told IFLR1000.
Spangler described himself as a West Coast-based lawyer with a broadly based practice.
“Right now, I’m sitting in an office in sunny Southern California that boasts two other investment funds partners and several associates, all very well trained. It’s quite an effective platform to be able to service a variety of clients’ needs. The days of one partner sitting alone, not having the staffing to do deals, I think those days are past. Having access to these resources is what the demanding 21st century client expects,” Spangler commented.
Spangler holds a J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School and a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
