Troutman Sanders continues to expand its finance practice with the addition of an experienced partner in New York.

John McDonald, a lawyer specializing in private equity and investment funds transactions, joins Troutman from Kelley Drye & Warren, where he worked as special counsel for just over ten years. McDonald has also been an associate at K&L Gates and at Hogan Lovells. He advises clients in many types of transactions including M&A, bridge financings, debt financings, and fund formation. McDonald’s client base encompasses asset managers as well as CEOs and corporations. On the private equity side, McDonald’s clients include Tailwind Capital Partners, Putnam Bridge Financing, and DLJ Merchant Banking Partners, a private equity shop associated with Credit Suisse.

Along with his representation of clients, McDonald has authored numerous client bulletins on topics ranging from the M&A sale process to the raising of venture capital.

McDonald’s hiring is only the latest step in the expansion of a law firm that added a pair of lending and structured finance partners, Jeffrey Rosenthal and Thomas Duignan, in February 2013, and then hired a corporate and private equity lawyer, Michael Weinsier, in July 2014. Moreover, Troutman announced the internal promotion of ten partners earlier this month, along with the appointment of new office managing partners in Chicago and Tysons Corner, Virginia. In July 2012, Troutman became one only of a few Americas-based law firms of any size or profile to open an office in Beijing.

McDonald holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and a B.S. from Stony Brook University.
