Biography

Matthias Pressler is a partner at Schoenherr in Vienna. He has established himself as an expert in banking & finance and capital markets with a focus on financial services regulatory law. Matthias regularly advises credit institutions and other financial institutions on regulatory matters in relation to M&A and re-structuring, on implementation of and compliance with regulatory requirements (CRD IV/V, CRR/CRR II, MiFID II, PSD II, AMLD IV/V, etc) or on regulatory balance sheet measures such as (synthetic) securitisations. Throughout his years with Schoenherr, Matthias has been involved in many of the firm's national and cross-border transactions involving banking respectively financial services regulatory law. In numerous cases he assisted domestic and international clients in connection with ownership control matters.

Matthias' practice also includes advice on an all types of investment services and conduct of business requirements, in and outbound cross-border financial services, compliance and licensing requirements for (new) business models. The latter includes, in particular, advice on the legal aspects in the context of new technologies such as Blockchain-driven applications like crypto-assets and general FinTech and Open Banking business models, including all payment service aspects which come along with such new business models. In recent years the registration of advice to virtual asset service providers has become a particular field of expertise

He also covers funds (UCITS/AIFs) and the respective financial services regulations, including requirements for passporting and for offering & marketing of fund products. Matthias holds a degree from the University of Vienna (Mag. iur. 2010) and the Vienna University of Economics and Business (BSc. in business administration 2015). He speaks English and German.
