Barilla buys Wasa from Novartis

Swiss pharmaceuticals company Novartis is selling its Wasa crispbread unit to Italy’s Barilla Alimentare. The Italian food company is paying Sfr475 million ($315 million) including debt. The deal is part of Novartis’s move to refocus its consumer health division.

At Novartis, general counsel Niklaus Gadient has sought the advice of Zurich-based Bär & Karrer. Rolf Watter is leading the firm's team. The Barilla legal department is represented by Franco Guariglia, who has looked to three firms in Europe. In Germany, Bruckhaus Westrick Heller Lober is advising from Frankfurt and Dusseldorf. The team headed by Frankfurt partners Konstantin Mettenheimer and Andreas Fabritius includes associate Marc Reysen in Dusseldorf who is in charge of German and international antitrust. In Zurich, Homburger Rechtsanwalte partners Peter Kurer and Claude Lambert are advising Barilla together with Swedish firm Hammarskiold & Co through partners Jacob Melander and Per Gustav Ekbom.
