The Brazilian government is expected to auction leases to drill oil and natural gas in 23 areas next year.

This follows an auction of exploration rights of 27 areas in June 1999. A total of 38 oil companies from a dozen countries registered to compete and 10 of the firms bid a total of $123 million for the right to drill oil and gas in 12 blocks.
