Opening a Basel III event at the European Commission on last Tuesday, vice president Valdis Dombrovskis outlined work still needed to achieve the EU’s long-term ambition of a European banking union (EBU).

Speaking at Charlemagne Building in Brussels, which houses the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs, Dombrovskis explained just how long it has taken for EBU plans to develop.

“This month marks four years since the Commission made its proposal to give the banking union stronger and more uniform insurance cover,” he said.
