Christine Lagarde, chairman of Baker & McKenzie's global policy committee, became the French minister for foreign trade. Lagarde practised labour and antitrust law as a partner at Baker & McKenzie in Paris during the late 1980s. She became managing partner of the office in 1991 and joined the firm's executive committee in 1995. Last year Lagarde received the Legion D'Honneur from French president Jacques Chirac.

Andrea Cristaudi, Simmons & Simmons

Simmons & Simmons has strengthened its Italian offices. In Milan, the firm recruited Andrea Cristaudi as a corporate partner from Allen & Overy. Cristaudi is a specialist in M&A and equity capital markets and has advised Société Générale, Banca IMI, and Banca Intesa on corporate transactional work. Meanwhile, the Rome office hired a team of six employment lawyers from Studio Legale Tributario. The group includes Tiziano Treu, formerly the Italian minister for employment.
