As the contest to be the chosen face of the Democratic Party in the 2020 election season heats up, and the country continues to reel from a barrage of white-supremacist inspired domestic terrorism, there's rarely a dull moment for those following the world's self-elected superpower.

One would think that this would be a poorly timed moment for the US to double down on an unnecessary trade war with the second most powerful economy, but that is exactly what President Trump and his administration have done, introducing an additional $550 billion of tariffs on goods produced by China. The US is also set to feel the burn, with China quickly firing back with its own tariffs and US produce expenditure reductions.
