Europe, Middle East & Africa: Cruel summer

It isn't just the weather that has been worrying the financial sector, with meteorological chaos ensuing in seemingly every possible orifice of the continent. Whether it be political, economic – or both – politicians and market participants returning from their summer breaks have a lot to consider.

Governments have been less than stable. First it was Italy. With a strong turnout in the European Parliament elections and sky-high polling, Matteo Salvini of the Northern League party seemed desperate for an election, which could have seen the far-right party increase its majority and potentially lead the government. This backfired as Italy's centre-left Democratic Party and governing party, the Five Star Movement, managed to make an agreement to share power.
