A tough year to succeed in M&A

The 2008 rankings for law firm performance in M&A, private equity and corporate work reveal which law firms have adapted best to a turning market

The past year was not an easy one for those law firms that had grown and, most importantly, profited from the boom in M&A work over the past few years. A sudden volte face was required, with some lawyers changing their job descriptions from M&A to corporate, or even restructuring, specialists. This was easier for the smaller, regional firms that have always employed partners on a broader basis of practice. For some international firms, it was a lot harder....
